Precautions for purchasing copper faucets

Confirm the purity and standards of the copper materials

High-quality copper faucets mostly use H59 or H62 copper materials, which have a high copper content and few impurities, and thus have better corrosion resistance. When making a purchase, you can ask the merchant or check the product description to confirm whether the copper material grade (such as 'H59 copper') is indicated, and avoid choosing models that do not indicate the material or are vaguely labeled as 'pure copper'. If it is an imported product, it is necessary to confirm whether it meets the requirements of the national standard GB18145 for the composition of copper materials.

Test lead-free processes and safety

Copper faucets need to be prevented from lead leaching. When purchasing, it is necessary to confirm whether they have undergone lead-free treatment (such as nickel plating on the inner wall or using low-lead copper alloys). You can ask the merchant to provide a lead leaching test report (the national standard requires ≤5μg/L), or purchase the model labeled 'lead-free copper'. If there is no report to check, you can touch the inner wall to observe whether it is smooth and free of rust. Inferior copper materials may be prone to rust due to excessive impurities.

Check the thickness and quality of the electroplating layer

The anti-rust performance of copper faucets depends on the electroplating layer. The thickness of the electroplated nickel-chromium layer of high-quality products is usually ≥8 microns. When making a purchase, you can observe with the naked eye whether the surface is as bright as a mirror, touch it to see if there is no roughness or particles, and wipe it with a dry cloth to check if it is prone to leaving fingerprints or water marks. The edges and corners of the surface can be gently scraped (with the merchant's permission). If the electroplating layer is too thin, the copper-colored substrate may be exposed.

Evaluate the weight and structural density

Copper has a high density. High-quality copper faucets are usually heavier (about 30% heavier than zinc alloy faucets of the same size). When making a purchase, you can weigh it with both hands. If it is too light, it may be mixed with zinc alloy or other metals. Tap the main body of the faucet gently. The sound should be deep and solid without any sense of emptiness. If the sound is clear or hollow, it may indicate that the internal structure is not dense and is prone to leakage after long-term use.

Test the valve core and sealing performance

The valve core is the core component of a faucet. Ceramic valve cores are mainstream due to their wear resistance and good sealing performance. When making a purchase, you can try turning the handle to feel if the switch is smooth without any lag, and gently listen for any abnormal sounds or dripping sounds. Some styles come with leak-proof gaskets or double-layer sealing designs, which can further reduce the risk of water leakage. If permitted in the store, water can be drawn to test whether it is stable at the minimum water output to prevent dripping and leakage.

Check the compatibility of accessories and installation

Confirm whether the product comes with complete accessories (such as hoses, fixed seats, and sealing gaskets), and check whether the hose material is stainless steel braided or EPDM rubber (resistant to aging and high temperature). The length of the hose should be sufficient (recommended ≥50 cm) to connect the rear water pipe, and the interface should match the specifications of the water pipes in the home (such as G1/2 or G3/4). If it is an embedded installation, it is necessary to confirm that the size of the faucet base fits the hole on the countertop.

Confirm the after-sales service and warranty period

Copper faucets, due to their relatively high cost, require attention to after-sales support. When making a purchase, you can ask about the warranty period (usually 3 to 5 years) and confirm whether it includes services such as valve core replacement and leakage repair. Some merchants offer free on-site installation or technical guidance, which can be given priority consideration. If the product has no warranty or the service is unclear, you should purchase it with caution to avoid high maintenance costs in the later stage.

Through the above key points, you can purchase copper faucets that are safe in material and durable, avoiding health risks or leakage problems caused by excessive lead, thin electroplating layer or poor sealing. When making a purchase, one should comprehensively consider the material, craftsmanship and service, rather than merely relying on appearance or weight as the judgment criteria.
